Where Maison Sheli Began: A Sri Lankan Reverie

By Nisheli Wijesundera Gonzalez · 01 August 2025 · 6 min read

I write this while looking out across the coastline of Galle, with the white lighthouse standing quietly beside me and the Indian Ocean stretching endlessly before me.

There are some places that do not simply exist in memory. They live within you. Sri Lanka is one of those places for me.

Only last weekend, I celebrated my wedding on the golden sands of Bentota Beach, surrounded by the people I love most. In the days leading up to it, my friends, husband to be and I travelled through this beautiful island, moving from misty tea trails to sunlit coastlines, from ancient kingdoms to wild landscapes where peacocks wandered, elephants moved slowly through the trees, and the rare glimpse of a leopard’s spots left us breathless.

We tasted tropical fruits ripened by the sun, spices warm with history, and food that was fiery, fragrant, and full of life. We stood before the ancient majesty of Sigiriya, the Lion Rock fortress rising from the earth like a story carved in stone. We watched the coastline shift from the raw beauty of Ahangama on the south coast to the timeless charm of Galle on the west.

Everywhere we went, we were met with kindness. Smiling faces, generous hearts, and a softness that made the island feel both familiar and newly discovered.

On returning, as an adult.

I was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Australia when I was ten. As a child, I returned many times, but it was only on this journey, as an adult, that I truly saw her. Not just as the country I came from, but as a place of deep beauty, richness, and soul.

This journey awakened something in me.

It made me think about how much I adore Sri Lanka’s beauty, and how proud I am to carry this island within me. I began imagining a home décor collection that would honour Sri Lanka, not in an obvious way, but through quiet little details. Pieces that would hold the feeling of the island. Objects that, when placed in a home, could transport you back to the pearl of the Indian Ocean.

The first chapter.

The first Maison Sheli collection is inspired by the textures, colours, and symbols I encountered on this journey. Chilli motifs that echo the warmth and fire of Sri Lankan cuisine. Shells that remember the coastline. Frangipani flowers that bloom with softness and nostalgia. Tea-inspired details that nod to the misty hills and plantations.

Each piece carries a subtle thread back to Sri Lankan culture, landscape, and memory.

Sri Lanka will always be the first chapter of Maison Sheli. The beginning. The place where the idea became something more than a dream. A feeling, a collection, a story to be brought into the home.

And from here, Maison Sheli will continue to follow the places that move me, the destinations that change me, and the stories that deserve to be carried forward through beautiful objects.

This is the beginning of Sri Lankan Reverie. A love letter to the island that made me.
